Sustainability-minded readers have two upcoming dates to add to their calendar.
Paint Exchange Day, Saturday, July 29th, 12pm – 4pm
The Friends of Decker’s Creek is hosting a paint exchange day to keep recyclable and reusable paint out of the water supply. On Saturday, July 29th, home improvers can meet in downtown Morgantown from 12pm to 4pm at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park to drop off or pick up free paint for their home improvement projects.
The group is accepting water and latex paints, but not oil based paints. Volunteers will be on hand to inspect each of the dropped off paint cans. Families can drop off a maximum of five gallons, and the event is for households only, not businesses. Each dropped off paint can must not be expired and be at least one-half gallon full. DIYers looking for a cheap project can pick up dropped paint at no cost. More information can be found on the Facebook event page as well as the Friends of Decker’s Creek website.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, Saturday August 5th, 8am – 11am
Residents of Monongalia County have another option for disposing of paints and other hazardous household wastes. On August 5th, the Morgantown Utility Board is sponsoring a collection of common household toxins, including bleach, anti-freeze, used motor oil, oil paints, and more. The collection will take place at the MUB offices, on 278 Greenbag Road.
The full list of items accepted is listed on the MUB website, and it also includes items that the MUB cannot accept. There is a 5 gallon/50lb limit of waste per household. This opportunity is limited to residents of Monongalia County only, and residents must bring proof of ID before dropping goods off.
