MORGANTOWN – With the weather getting warmer in May, it’s the perfect time to trade in your four wheels for two. Get on your bicycles and go for a ride during Bike Month! Morgantown Mayor Marti Shamberger officially proclaimed May as “Morgantown Bike Month” during the City Council meeting on May 2, 2017. May is also designated as National Bike Month by the League of American Bicyclists.
The Morgantown Bicycle Board has organized several special events to celebrate cycling in the city, promote the benefits of cycling, and encourage more people to give biking a try. The Bicycle Board will be holding a series of monthly casual rides starting at the Spruce Street Farmer’s Market Pavilion beginning on May 12th at 6:00 p.m. The rides will be held the second Friday of each month through September. All ages are welcome at this event. The Bicycle Board hopes that by providing an informal venue and focus on fun riding through city streets, the rides will help spread safe road riding practices and create visibility for cyclists around Morgantown.
Bike to Work day is also this month, observed in Morgantown with the rest of the nation on May 19, 2017. Biking commuters can find coffee and snacks from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on the Caperton Trail at Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park. Cyclists are invited to grab a treat as they pass through, or stay a while and socialize with other Morgantown cyclists. A group ride will leave at 8:30 a.m. heading towards the WVU Evansdale Campus.
For anyone new to bicycle commuting, there will be Bicycle Board members in attendance to answer questions. The Board also hopes residents will consider joining the competition and logging their commuter miles at www.nationalbikechallenge.org Additional information on 2017 Bike Month events and group rides can be found through at www.bikemorgantown.com, or by following “Bike Morgantown” on Facebook.
